Raymond Elementary News

“Individual commitment to a group effort – that is what makes a team work, a company work, a society work, a civilization work.”  -Vince Lombardi

Raymond Elementary School has a unique character trait for January.  While, in itself, teamwork is not a trait- it encompasses many traits in order to successfully fulfill a task. A successful team/group has cohesion that emerges when members can exhibit the following skills:

Openness- Group members are willing to get to know one another, particularly those with different interests and backgrounds.

Trust and Self-Disclosure- Group members trust one another enough to share their own ideas and feelings.

Support- Group members demonstrate support for one another as they accomplish their goals. There is loyalty and encouragement among team members.

Respect- Group members communicate their opinions in a way that respects others, focusing on “what can we learn?”

The importance of “working well with others” is stressed in so many of today’s careers. It is the foundation that builds the culture of a successful family, business, school or community. If parents ever need any resources our activities that can help build the above skills, I would be glad to share some with you!

  • Students have a couple days off this month. Mark your calendars for January 18 th  and 19 th  as a “no school” day.
  • Over the next month, students will be using the Smarter Balanced Interim Assessment. Since results are not counted like the test at the end of the year, it will be used more to help students become familiar with the functionality and types of questions that will be on the test.
  • PTO will also be hosting a Winter Ball on Friday, January 29 th  at 6:00 PM in the Elementary Gym. Admission is free, but parents must accompany their children. The PTO is looking for snack donations to sell. If you are able to donate, please send store-bought snacks to school with your child or drop them off into the office.

RHS Flex Center

The digital word and social media can be a lot of fun as well as very useful, when used in a practical manner. Snapchat, Facebook and Instagram are but a few of the places our kids go in order to share thoughts and pictures with their friends and family. Most companies have a Facebook page, and even public entities, such as the Raymond School District and the Raymond police, share news and events of social media on almost a daily basis.

Unfortunately, it’s just as simple to share inappropriate content. What might seem like an innocent photo or comment can easily turn into something that borders on being (or is) illegal. It’s easy to share, difficult to anticipate the consequences. Often, it’s not just the person who sends the information that is hurt; people who receive the illegal material may be in violation of the law as well.

RHS will be having an instructional assembly on January 28th to educate our kids about the consequences of pushing the send button before thinking things through. We realize that some families may wish to teach their own child about the invisible pitfalls of the digital world. If you would like to educate your student about this facet of society yourself, you may opt your child out of this assembly by calling the high school and simply letting the office know. Kids who opt out will be sent to a study hall to catch up on homework.

Finally, Student Led Conferences are coming up on February 3-5. Your student will be working with you to set up a time when they and you can sit down with a school advisor and review the year so far as well as plan for the future.
